live reports

limonadal - u-cover label night
gent, belgium

This time Ontayso was present by Koen Lybaert solo behind his laptop. Full force Ableton live gig that was based on minimal beats and driven basslines. A sound that can be compaired to the wellknown Basic Channel sound mixed with Plastikmans liked tunes. For this night Ontayso had worked out some minimal video based on pictures of nature. The night came togheter with live gigs from -Scaldis- and Zool.

07/10/2005
Kanuti Gildi Saal
Tallinn, Estonia
(Together with Joel Tammik
at the Hea Uus Heli Festival)

The capital city of Estonia with local promoter and label owner aivar Tonso brings every year an exclusive alternative festival where electronic music has a central place. This years next to a dozen Baltic and Skandinavian acts also the Dutch Funckarma, German Niobe and Japanese KK Null and Ontayso made their presents to 2005 Heal Uus Heli festival. Together with local Estonian electronic hero Joel Tammik, Koen Lybaert and Esther Santoyo brought a very minimal but richfull ambient gig while the audience was pleasantly quite, listening and also watching to Ontayso's video, made for the U-cover tour end 2004. The gig was one long ambient trip where sounds had minimal shifts and slow textures were confronted with rare rhythmic parts. Everyone's input was mixed gently into to each other sounds, driven and swelled by effects to translate the images flow into sound. This gig showed the unexpected results and the unexpected energy that comes of bringing different artists together, giving them a space to work out their own ideas and sound and to express.

Estonia left a big impression on us, not only the music and the festival, but also the beautiful nature and landscapes. Ontayso has also been making field recordings and have taken video and pictures from beautiful places. (thank you Karita) Here you can find some selection of pictures taken by Koen Lybaert (Estonia 2005) Waiting for more...

cc luchtbal - seats 'n beats # 15
antwerp, belgium

The first Ontayso gig of 2004 was part of a u-cover label night together with Kettel, Tim Koch and Ten and Tracer at the Seats and Beats in Antwerp.
As Ontayso we've made an evolution in our music and a lot of new ideas have been integrated into the live-show. A special video was made for this night with images that where recorded in and near Antwerp at locations like the harbour, an industrial park and old buildings.
The combination with real instruments and electronic components truly melted in a perfect and gentle way and created live a unique ambient soundtrack on the edited pictures of Antwerp. This time Ontayso played as a four-tet with Dave Vanderplas on percussions and sax, Esther Santoyo on synthesizers and Steven Lambrechts together with Koen Lybaert on guitars. The final result was a 50 minutes long improvisation set of soft drones, sweet and nostalgic sax, spacey manipulated guitars, cymbal sounds that filled and trembled in the hall, rhythmic passages with subtle electronics and energetic percussions.

cc luchtbal - seats 'n beats # 7
antwerp, belgium

This time Ontayso was the opening act of the Seats 'n Beats # 7. Kontakt der Junlinge (feat. Thomas Köner + Asmus Tietchens) and Vladislav Delay + AGF were also performing that night. The atmosphere was very quiet and super relaxed. The video was specially re-edited for this performance and came even more strong than the one used for the DOT.NU festival. The gig turned out as a truly David Lynch celebration.

stichting V2 - dot.nu festival
rotterdam, netherlands

29/09/2002
paradiso - dot.nu festival
amsterdam, netherlands

Dot.nu was a two day festival about video art and live music in two different cities in Holland. This time the video kept the central place in the performance and during 35 minutes we tried to bring a coherent piece of ambient soundscapes and experimental parts together with the flowing images recorded in Mexico, Antwerp, Köln and New York. In Paradiso we had the chance to use a huge screen to proyect our video, the result was incredible as the reflected colors gave a special effect to the set.

recycle - station brussel-kapellekerk
brussels, belgium

The first Ontayso live gig turned out in a very nice way, and even though we couldn't do a proper soundcheck everything felt right. Esther Santoyo on synthezisers and electronics, Dave Vanderplas on percussion, cymbals and sax together with Koen Lybaert who completed the set with electronics, prepared guitar and percussion brought a gentle mix of acoustic and electronic music. Ambient scapes, intimate drones, atmospheric sounds, melodic layers, subtle sax. Intense, obscure and dense moments in contrast with gentle, luminous and melodic parts. Recyclart, which is the venue where the performance took place, is situated under several railroads from a Brussel's train station, so we had the great accompaniment of sounds of trains passing by while we were playing. The performance was presented together with an abstract dance from belgian choreographer Chantal Yzermans and the New York video artist Kurt Ralske. For one hour, the music, dance and video created a subtle dream world. A very promising start for Ontayso's live performances.
