This release is a collection of structured tracks based around carefully controlled swells of sound and textured harmonics. Michael Santos collates processed guitar recordings and laces them with static, hiss and ground failure noises to create a dynamic flow of sound. The nine tracks on offer exhibit unusually rigid arrangements, building and reworking phrases to keep the flow moving and ensuring it doesn't get swamped in endless loops. Principally, however, Santos's approach zooms in on melody, as 'Soft Pocket' showcases a diverse mix, ranging from melancholy and introvreted to warm and bouncy.

Caduceus is comprised of United States-based husband and wife duo, Christian and Joanne Althoff. They use sounds from our daily lives as source material for all compositions, balancing a more organic process against the inherent structure of computer-based music. Specifically, "Home" is an amalgamation of home recording and raw data manipulation. Influences include jazz, ebm of the late 80's/early 90's, abstract techno and punk rock in all its myriad forms. The songs on "Home" represent a move away from our earlier, more dance floor oriented work, towards a more personal exploration of sound and environment. We incorporated minimalist reduction with unexpected sound interaction. Our goal was to find a balance between the worlds of musique concrete and glitch.
For fans of early minimal techno ala Pan Sonic and Raster-Noton. It's nice to be at home.

With their own recording studio in the deep woods of southern Sweden they create basic tracks from acoustic instruments, gadgets and equipment found all over the world. 'Älskade sjukdom', their stumming debut, contains thirteen tracks of multiple organic styles layered, processed and manipulated through computer software. With the vocal input from Elin Almered (aka Little Death) and Janina Frank the music has a complex horrorish air that comes very close to the beauty of Deaf Center and contains traces of Earth and Sonic Youth. Because of the lack of beats and the unconventional tuning of their instruments Utom Alla sounds like the perfect ambient soundtrack for the cold and dark winter nights yet to come. An absolute tip!

On this, their self-titled debut album, they have created 17 tracks, shifting between the strange and dramatic, ambient and up-beat. Brian Grainger and Lee Batchelor create a more obscure and experimental sound than most Milieu tracks found on Aurora Borealis and Night Currents. While clearly a different approach, Milieu's unmistakable style is present in a new way—meshed with the ruthlessly ambivalent, somewhat sardonic character of unknown origin. Flax Harmonade is far from your typical one-off collaborative effort, and stands alone as an oddly morose yet playful album. Influences include Mike & Rich and the early days of braindance.

LAN Formatique
Goodnight Noises Everywhere
03.2006

LAN Formatique is a new arrival on the Scottish electronica scene. Following a smattering of compilation appearances, he now presents his debut release, "Goodnight Noises Everywhere" - a marriage of crunching contemporary electronics and delicately emotional melodicism. LAN Formatique is a combination of shoegazing indie rock mixed with emotionally loaded electronics. Reflecting Ennio Morricone's likeminded melodies with gentle suggestions of My Bloody Valentine's electrified minimalism. These are balanced with influences from Europe's best known electronic acts, such as Ulrich Schnauss, Xela, Quench and Styrofoam. The music revolves around a diaphanous, twilight world of second-hand paperbacks, forgotten languages and the depression of post-industrial Scotland. Expressed through digital percussion, haunting minimalist piano and atmospheric strings, it is a wholly personal sound geared to tingle the synapses and heartstrings in equal measure. "Goodnight Noises Everywhere" also features remixes from Jeye, Scrap.edx and Liar's Rosebush.

Criogenesis
02.2006

Tim Jackiw has been composing electronic music for about 12 years. Living in Adelaide, Australia and important player of the local electronic music scene together with Tim Koch and Sense it seems strange that he didn't have that many releases made in the past. The music for Criogenesis was written in 2001 as an audio diary from a time when he was living alone in a small apartment situated in a noisy semi industrial environment. Hence they are fragments of memories, or composite memories from that time in his life. The instruments used were all outboard gear from a previous studio he had set up, a couple of Akai samplers, synth modules and effects. He is intent on extracting emotion from his analogue music machines, and seems to strive for an obvious depth in his 'sound' launching the listener on a sonic journey that doesn't have any apparent destination. Criogenesis contains playful slices of atmosphere, complimented by spare soft rhythms and gentle, yet moving shades of melody. Tim Jackiw created here a wonderful lovely ambient release.

Our U-cover cdr label has the intention to present or more experimental minded music from connected artists or to present young talent from all over the world. And sometimes the world can be very small as Bernard Zwijzen is living less than an hour driving from the U-cover headquarter. And what a talent this Belgium artist shows here with Sonmi451. He creates his own blend of minimal techno with beautiful and warm sounds. The Sonmi451-sound bears resemblance to the more atmospheric stuff that is released through labels like Mille Plateaux, Scape, Kompakt, etc... Sonmi451's work reminds us of Jan Jelinek, Biosphere, Shuttle 358, Thilman Ehrhorn, Twerk/Shawn Hatfield, Aeroc/Geoff White and Akufen/Marc Leclair..
The name Sonmi451 is a character from David Mitchell's novel "Cloud Altas" who works as a slave-robot in an underground diner place, in a society called Nea So Copros in the distant future. It's quite a sympathetic humanoïd, who's aspiring efforts to become enlightened are brutally oppressed by a totalitarian, consumer-driven regime. András Jakab is the 20 year old Hungarian artist and makes beautiful strong IDM electronica under the name Cooler. Since his childhood he is been obsessed with computers and synths and that shows in 'Do aliens cry?' his debut for U-cover. Think about the best of Funckarma and Bauri, with the swing and groove of Lusine Icl and Loess all blended in his magical Cooler system with a use of sublime samples of acoustic music to give the overall sound a personal and unique result.

Milieu
Aurora Borealis
06.2005

Brian Grainger has been making music for over 8 years and has explored all kinds of styles, from acoustic guitar music to chaotic noise and experimental electronica, to end up as Milieu making beautiful, sensitive and very well produced ambient, mixed with IDM-related moments. On his first output for U-cover he delivers 16 tracks, and all excellent in our honest opinion. A total time over 78 minutes that must convince everyone of the huge talent from this hidden American star. Milieu lives in the outskirts of Columbia, South Carolina where pure nature is the center of attention. Milieu's Aurora Borealis handles as pure music.

Ontayso meets Gizmo Cosmos meets Joel Tammik
Theme from planet Space
05.2005

For the 10th release on the U-cover CDr label we have something special. Ambient meets Jazz meets Dub become a very unique but nevertheless excellent combination and the result is pretty amazing...Gizmo Cosmos (Gert Wyninckx, Tim Coenen, Steven Van Gool and Juul Lemmens) is an Antwerp jazz combo who has been playing in jazz clubs for longer than a halve decade. Joel Tammik reworked some of the unreleased Ontayso (Esther Santoyo, Koen Lybaert, Dave vanderplas and Steven lambrechts) tracks into his world of Dub. Koen Lybaert worked out a final mix of the three different styles into 5 tracks for a total of 45 minutes. Theme from planet Space do reminds us to a David lynch soundtrack...lovely!
